After reading this book so far I have come to a conclusion that this family is one seriously unfortunate family! Nothing good has ever happened to them and even if something started off as good thing it has to end tragically...They're simply cursed I guess but anyhow...
The story mainly revolves around Ellen and her actions effect almost everyone in the story.Ellen is not a flat character , meaning she has changed thriughtout the story , making her a round character. She was this young kid that had stuttering problems that was shy of her ownself and now she is a married ,teen mom... Her childish crush or lust, as what her mom calls it, led to her pregnancy...Aside from Billy who is apparently not manly enough to keep his promise of "keeping his hands to himself and not trying anything on Ellen" , Hilda should take most of the blame of her daughter's mistake. She has tried so hard to keep her "innocent" and basically in a bubble that she didn't tell her about the fundementals of life and marriage. I don't see why she has never spoken to Ellen about sex or any other adult-related topics ; the fact that Ellen was kept oblivious to all those things has made her a victim of rape. Although Hilda did what she did out of good intentions and only wanted what's best for her daughter, she should be blamed for what has happened because mothers should at some point sit down with their daughters and have "the talk" . Well I guess the lessons learnt came at a costly price...Hilda's dreams for her daughter have been crushed and Ellen has been scarred for life...
Percy has truly proved that he is such a gentleman and deserves all the best for he has offered to marry Ellen and cover up her mistake plus take Billy's baby as his own. It was obvious that he has always had feelings towards her which was also why he has offered to marry her, so his act wasn't all that selfless...but anyway, he should be applauded for at least covering up for his brother's dirty act. Percy was patient with Ellen to the extreme and didn't dare to get her mad or to annoy her even though she may have hurt him several times ( oh how i wish someone like Percy actually existed ) and rejected his love. Ellen has finally accepted him and fell in love him especially after she has seen what an awful husband and father Billy is and how blessed she is to have Percy in her life.
Although Hilda linked London to bad luck and unhappiness, it still followed them even when they moved to
a nearby village called Christmas Pie ; the most tragic accident happens there to Ellen which ends up killing her baby daughter which only brings more despair to the family ( told you they were cursed ).
Spirituality plays a key role in the story; Hilda doesn't believe in God yet turns to him in times of weakness but quickly loses faith if the outcome was unpleasant. She always questions herself about the presence of her mother's spirit and about how she looks out for her. Their neighbor Valerie is a "gifted" person who senses abnoramlities and things that aren't easily sensed by normal human beings; she gets some kind of visions which foretell events. I'm pretty sure that she knew that Sarah, Ellen's daughter, was going to die because she once paused in a conversation that was about their children growing up and she immediately changed the subject when she "sensed" that Sarah was going to die young; Val hides that from Ellen though. Ellen has ran into so many "religious" or "gifted" people in her life that have told her about signs , fortune-telling , visions, etc.
ps: im really sorry that i posted this pretty late but time wasn't on my side.
