The story has a way of keeping the reader eager to know what happens next and what's around the corner for its exciting events that are so vividly described have the ability to engage the reader in the story and to help the reader put him/her self in the each of the characters' shoes.
As the title suggests, hope truly never dies and this has been exemplified in the story. Ellen's naivete played a role in holding on to the hope that Doug, her dad, is still alive out there because she believed or chose to believe the old lady's vision although her mom was in complete disbelief. This shows that kids have wider imagination and faith despite their young age because they tend to fantasize and think about what is beyond reality. Hilda didn't give the lady's "rubbish" a second thought although she may have been happier if she held on to that slight chance that her husband may be alive.
Ellen has grown and matured throught these ten chapters which cover almost a year and a half. She has been through a lot and what made it harder for her is that her mom was usually not there for here although that wasn't her intentions but Hilda was too upset and devastated to console her daughter and lend her an ear so Ellen was left with so many unanswered questions that she had to seek explanation for on her own and without the help of her mother. She has also developed new emotions and feelings ; for instance, she developed a new crush or even physical attarction toward Billy , a boy which is her same age, and with her juvenile love came jealousy too and it is sad that she has to go through all of this without the support of her mother. So I won't be so hard on Hilda I should mention that she did infact put her daughter's safety first by taking her back to the countryside against her own will but she wisely chose not to be selfish any more for Ellen is what is left for her in this world ( before finding out that Doug is actually alive) . Ellen spent the happiest times at the cottage where she reunited with her dad and got her old, happy mom back too.
Ellen seems to attract Percy, Billy's older brother, but his feelings aren't mutual....so far.
Hilda is considered to be lucky compared to other Londoners and to those in war for so many reasons :
first, she was fortuante enough to get the help and support of so many good people along the way like Mabel,Gertie,Dora etc.
second, her husband is still alive and is safe amd sound with her.
third, she actually has a place to stay and her home hasnt been ruined.
Gertie seemed to have changed too. She has moved on from Hilda and obviously put her feelings towards her to rest and actually met someone and is now living with her happily. Gertie is still trying her best to be a great friend to Hilda to compensate for what she has previously done to annoy Hilda. Gertie is a good woman with that horrible character flaw but that doesn't mean that she is a bad person or friend and to prove that she still visits Hilda and her family despite the hardships and still offers her help only in return of Hilda's friendship.
That's it for now...but God knows what awaits us in the chapters to come...
